It has been nearly two decades since the Matrix trilogy came to a close and we said goodbye to Neo and the humans who remained in Zion fighting the machines.

A franchise that brought science fiction and futuristic dystopians into the limelight for everyone to enjoy and is still today regarded as one of the most remarkable films ever made.

And it’s finally coming back! December 22nd of this year, we will be meeting Keanu Reeves as Thomas Anderson once again.

The Cast

In the trailer above, we see the familiar faces of Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves but there is definitely something amiss about the world they now live in. Upon meeting each other, they seem to experience vague familiarity but their recognition is limited.

According to the official IMDB page for the film, we can also expect to see Jada Pinkett Smith returning as Niobe and Lambert Wilson as Merovingian set to return.

The cast is joined by a number of new faces with the most recognisable and potentially influential in the events of this film as Neil Patrick Harris who appears to be Thomas Anderson’s therapist and Jonathan Groff as a mysterious character who knows about and directly references the Matrix in this trailer.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also feature as what appears to be a younger Morpheus and is listed on the IMDB as “Morpheus”.

Trailer Breakdown

This trailer which was actually unveiled a month ago at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, but appears to have remained largely unspoiled.

The trailer reveals scenes that appear to be in an updated Matrix and those outside with images of the machines flying through a gothic scene. While there is not enough information to know what takes place inside the matrix, I believe it is safe to assume that a fair amount of this trailer takes place inside the matrix.

While Neo realised his power and potential at the conclusion of the original trilogy, Thomas Anderson in this reality appears to possess very little knowledge of even who he is, which makes the statement “You don’t know me.” to young Morpheus in this trailer even more telling.

With the backing track heavily referencing Alice in Wonderland and a descent into wonderland chasing rabbits, a theme which featured prominently in the first film and is obviously repeated here with the abundance of blue pills, the rabbit tattoo and the unfolding discovery of the world they have been placed into, we can expect to see a familiar introduction to the film and its concepts as the original film, but I do think that may be where the similarities end… Or at least I hope it then heads in a new direction and we learn more about the matrix and where the humans are now.

Lana Wachowski returns to direct this film without her sister and the trailer certainly gives the impression that this will be an event to eagerly await and unwrap just in time for Christmas as it comes out 22nd December 2021 in theatres across the UK and US and also HBO Max.

So book your tickets and get ready to re-enter the matrix in The Matrix Resurrections.
