The first Avatar film was a cultural and commercial phenomenon.
Following its 2009 release, the film won three Oscars and remains, proudly, the highest-grossing film of all time.
Now, after years of delays, including 5 years in production, we finally have a glimpse of the sequel, entitled Avatar: The Way of Water.
This trailer was first shown before theatre screenings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and has since been released online for the world to watch, alongside its first new set of images.
The trailer got a whopping 148.6 million views combined on its first day, according to Disney and 20th Century Fox.

The synopsis
The official synopsis for Avatar: The Way of Water is as follows:
‘Jake Sully and Ney’tiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.’
There are multiple, similar versions of the synopsis depending on each source. Another one, for example, is as follows:
‘Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water follows the journey of Jake Sully and Ney’tiri’s newfound family. Despite their best efforts to keep their family together, a familiar threat resurfaces and forces Jake, Ney’tiri, and their four children to flee to the land of the Metkayina clan.’
James Cameron stated that he hoped to nail down and recreate the themes and concepts that made Avatar so loved and successful. We are sure to get that intense, dramatic fantasy feel once more.
With 5 Avatar films expected in total, Cameron has plenty of opportunities to deliver that and more.

The promo poster for the sequel perfectly recreates the iconic Na’vi face of the first film’s poster, whilst also bringing an underwater feel to fit the sequel’s title.

Release date
So, we know we’re all excited and ready to watch this next instalment, but just how long do we have to wait?
Get ready to mark a date in your diaries, folks, because Avatar: The Way of Water will release in cinemas on December 16.
It’s still a long way off but don’t worry, we can hopefully expect many more images and trailers between now and then to sink our teeth into.
