The Assassin’s Creed franchise is one that has just kept on giving. With Ubisoft releasing a game practically every year, fans have constantly had something to sit down and get lost in.
Whether these games have been big wins like Brotherhood or absolute flops like Syndicate, we have always been expecting the next big thing from the AC franchise.
Now, Ubisoft has announced Assassins Creed Infinity and it’s safe to say that it could be the Marmite of the AC games.
Older fans seem to mostly be skeptical while newer fans seem to be eagerly awaiting further details and eventually the release which is set to be in 2024.
With the release so far away there are some details that Ubisoft has dropped. In their announcement, Ubisoft stated “We find ourselves in that very moment where we know the decisions we’re making for the franchise now will impact its future for years to come.”
With that said, here is what we know so far about Assassin’s Creed Infinity.
Cross Studio Collaboration
On their official website, Ubisoft announced that the two studios Montreal and Quebec were going to combine forces in developing and creating AC Infinity and stated that this was going to “guide, grow, evolve and define the overall future of Assassin’s Creed…” This could mean that there will be a lot more unification in the game.
Marc-Alexis Côté, who will now be the executive producer got his start working on Brotherhood and later took on his role as creative director for Syndicate. Étienne Allonier, AC’s brand lead will be joining Côté as well as Montreal’s own Julien Laferrière.
Some fans find themselves skeptical of this collaboration as there has historically been some rivalry between the two studios. However, this could be something that will force them to work together for something really good.
Despite skepticism on the two studios working well together, in their official announcement Ubisoft made clear their hope that things would be “less centered on studios and more focused on talent and leadership.”
Live-Service Play
With the surrounding rumors about this new AC game being “free-to-play” it has officially been confirmed that this will not be the case.
However, it will still be online play similar to games like Fortnite and the new live-service version of the GTA franchise.
This could mean that Assassin’s Creed Infinity will incorporate micro transactions as well within the game. It is speculated that it would be similar to Valhalla in that the game is ever expanding with content.
However, Infinity will be different in the way that it will not only expand in content but in the way that it will grow and evolve overtime keeping the platform fresh and ever growing for all players.
Notable elements of the game
In his confirmation about AC Infinity not being free-to-play, CEO of Ubisoft Yves Guillemot, stated that the game will “have a lot of narrative elements in it.”
With that said, Guillemot also confirmed that Assassin’s Creed will keep elements from past Assassin’s Creed games.
He states ““It’s going to be a huge game but with lots of elements that already exist in the games that we published in the past,” let’s hope that they’ll just keep the elements from the good AC games though.
Platforms
It’s likely that Assassin’s Creed Infinitywill be available to play on most major consoles including PlayStation, XBox, and PC.
Whether this game could also be ported to more portable consoles like the switch is yet to be seen, but they did manage to get Black Flag on there so there is some hope for handheld gamers.
Final Thoughts
As of right now Assassin’s Creed Infinity is still in early development. Apart from the confirmations we already have, everything else is just speculation.
With the collaborative studio approach to developing this game, there are big things ahead for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The ever growing, expanding, and changing elements have got fans’ imaginations going all over the place.
Will Infinity have a Helix type menu, showing different timelines and locations like the one that shows up in AC Unity? And what is Abstergo Industries’ role in all of this?
With the heavy narrative focus hopefully we can get some answers on this sooner rather than later, but 2024 is some time away and maybe an official trailer and more announcements will come in the coming months.
