San Diego Comic-Con was in full swing this weekend and Marvel did not disappoint with their announcements throughout!
We take a closer look at the announcements from the Marvel animation panel and their legendary Hall H panel where they discussed upcoming live-action projects.
There is a lot, so get comfy and read on!
Marvel Animation Panel
I Am Groot
I Am Groot surprised crowds with the news that we will be seeing it on Disney+ in just over two weeks!
With five original shorts available from August 10th, fans will be pleased to see their favourite alien baby tree take on some wild and wacky adventures.
Immediately following this announcement, fans speculated as to how it related to the mainline MCU and if it was canonical, but thankfully, Guardians of the Galaxy Writer and Director, James Gunn with his incredibly responsive Twitter account clarified that the series will now be a part of the standard timeline.
It’s not in the regular timeline.

For the first look at this series, check out the official trailer below!
Spider-Man: Freshman Year
Arguably one of the most highly anticipated animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year got some needed updates.
While we won’t get to see the series until 2024, we now know that it will feature Daredevil, voiced by Charlie Cox! However, MCU’s Spidey, Tom Holland will not be voicing our protagonist in the series.
Since the series was originally announced, and seemingly confirmed again during the panel by series head writer Jeff Trammell, the show takes place before Captain America: Civil War and will show Spidey’s origins in the MCU, but this has confused some fans and for good reason…
Peter Parker will interact with characters like Harry Osborn and Amadeus Cho, in addition to classic villains like The Unicorn, Chameleon, Scorpion, Speed Demon, Otto Octavius (Doc Ock), and Norman Osborn (Green Goblin). But keen fans may have their Peter tingle going crazy, because Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced Doc Ock and the Green Goblin as completely new characters that our hero was unaware of.
Not to mention the fact that Charlie Cox had a cameo in the film!
So how will the series reconcile these differences?
… Who knows. I guess we need to wait till 2024.
But, there is more good news, they announced a second season!
That’s right, two years before the show’s release, the sequel series has been confirmed, and you’ll never guess what it’s called. Ok, you might, it’s Spider-Man: Sophmore Year and will follow on directly from the first with Parker’s second year of highschool as it’s focal point.
Are you excited to see the new animated Spider-Man series?
X-Men ‘97
Another project that was previously announced now has a release window!
Coming to Disney+ in Autumn 2023, or Fall for our American readers, X-Men ‘97 will pick up where the original 90s series left off.
But as was revealed in the panel, there is one significant change from the original series.
When showing off the line-up of heroes who will carry the show, there was an unexpected switch in characters. Alongside Jubilee, Beast, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine and Gambit, Magneto takes the place of Professor X as the team leader! With a whole new outfit that comic fans may recognize!

What If…? Season 2
What If…? was a runaway hit that allowed the MCU to go down some more unexpected rabbit holes from Marvel Comic history and create some truly new and unique stories.
Season 2 will be streaming on Disney+ in early 2023 and lucky fans who attended San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) even got a sneaky preview!
Some notable teases include Steve Rogers as the Winter Soldier, a special racing episode with Iron Man stuck on Sakaar and an episode based on Neil Gaiman’s alternate universe limited Marvel series 1602.
There is a lot to look forward to from season 2 and a third season is confirmed to be in production alongside a spin-off series Marvel Zombies!

The film has been described as digging more into Rocket’s origin story and will feature a number of unannounced characters such as the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuki, and Cosmo the Spacedog, voiced by Maria Bakalova.
As well as new faces, one character is set to return, but with a new look and team…
Gamora will be back, and she is now leading the Ravagers!
Are you excited for GotG vol. 3?
Daredevil: Born Again
Charlie Cox will join the MCU in this 18-episode series alongside Vincent D’Onofrio who returns as Kingpin!
No details on how this series will tie-in to the Netflix series, but with a title like Born Again and the appearances we have seen so far, it is likely these are not the exact same iterations from Netflix.
But we will learn more very soon, considering Daredevil will be donning his suit in the She-Hulk series next month.
