Marvel has announced some big projects to come over the next couple of years and adding to this excitement is the recently announced but long rumoured, Secret Invasion.
If you’ve never heard of Secret Invasion but you have heard of Skrulls because of the Captain Marvel movie, then I’m going to take you through what happens in the comics and what it means for the MCU at large.

Secret Invasion was just one of those announced and had die-hard Marvel fans absolutely losing their minds with excitement.
The Basics
The Skrulls have existed long before they appeared in Captain Marvel and they even had their own comic series called Secret Invasion so basically, you can say that they’re kind of a big deal.
In addition to the Skrulls, we will be seeing Nick Fury in all his glory but who’s to say if we can trust him or not?
Skrulls, after all, are those lizard people conspiracy theorists have been banging on about right? Well, kind of but thankfully they’re stuck in the MCU so we’re good.
What happens in the Secret Invasion comics?
Believe it or not, Secret Invasion is written by the same man who has brought Ironheart to life, Brian Bendis. Along with the talented colourist Laura Martin, inker Mark Morales, and penciler Lainil Francis Yu the team brought the Skrulls onto the page in a really great way.
The story follows a post Kree-Skrull war (the one referenced in Captain Marvel) one in which the Illuminati, a superhero team not unlike the Avengers, made of Dr Strange, Iron Man, Charles Xavier and others go to warn the Skrulls that nothing good will come to them if they invade earth.
The Skrulls end up capturing the Illuminati to study them and it ends up not looking so good for our heroes, or for Earth.
The Skrulls have what they call Super Skrulls who not only shapeshift but can take on the powers of the superhumans they are disguised as.
Yikes! Right?
Yeah, not only that but it stirs up a whole lot of distrust in who is the real superhero and who is a Skrull.
The very secret invasion in the comics is headed by a princess Skrull who becomes the empress. She leads the invasion for the very same reason any other alien race invades Earth and that is utter domination.
Things eventually heat up to the point where there are quite a few battles between the real Avengers and the Skrull imposters. The tricky bit of all of this is that the Skrull’s invasion has left some things like S.H.I.E.L.D. compromised and of course, the superheroes have now been weakened.
There won’t be any spoilers here, but I will say that Hawkeye gets a hit on one of the main Skrulls which gives the real heroes an upper hand.
Also, in the comics, you find out that one of the Avengers has been an imposter that is revealed to be the empress Skrull. The end leads up to the “Dark Reign” storyline and maybe significantly for the future MCU, Female Loki is a prominent part of that, along with a few other faces we are expecting to join the MCU in the near future…
Final Thoughts
The MCU is growing which means we are getting the chance to explore some of the lesser-known heroes and storylines!
Getting a deeper look into the Skrulls and who they are is going to really give the next phase of Avengers some intense battles to fight.
After all, knowing that some of our most beloved superheroes might in fact be shapeshifting aliens isn’t going to give us much confidence in who is the imposter and who isn’t.
We’re going to see Nick Fury again but is he going to be the real Nick Fury or not? And how long have these imposters been in place?
